Learn Different Techniques for Sketching
Different Hatch Patterns
Each hatch pattern will acheive a different feeling or emotion for your drawings. Here are just some different hatching techniques that you may want to try out.
Different Values are achieved by Shadows are achieved by
layering the hatches on top of each layering the hatch until you
other. The closer the hatch marks have a difference in values
are together, the darker the value
will be.
Look at this sphere, notice that there are
many different components to
remember when you are using the different
hatching techniques in your
sketch. Also do not forget that
these different values are
achieved gradually.
The highlight is the intense
light that is reflected off the surface
The Half-Light is the mid-tone
values on the object where it receives
partial direct light.
Form Shadows are the
darker-value areas on the object
where there is no direct light
on the surface.
Cast Shadows are the area
of darker value created when
the object blocks the direct
light from another surface.
Reflection is the reverse image
caused by light bouncing off the
object.
Reflected Light is the lighter
area on the dark side of an
object caused by light bouncing
off another surface.
Experiment with the different hatching
styles until you have found the one that
works best for you. Look at these
sketches of the same house drawn
with different hatching techniques.
Notice how the overall feeling of the
picture is different for each sketch.
